It’s White Privilege to Die by MAiD I Bill Vassilopoulos

The Liberal government in Canada has finally said out loud what many suspected but rarely heard spoken so plainly. During testimony before Parliament’s Special Joint Committee on Medical Assistance in Dying, a witness stated: “People getting MAID are actually very privileged. They’re white. They’re well off. They’re highly educated. They’re not in institutions. They have families. The picture is one of privilege.”

This statement, entered into the official parliamentary record, raises profound questions about who is accessing MAiD and what this reveals about autonomy, suffering, social conditions, and the direction of end-of-life care policy in Canada. It challenges the common narrative that MAiD is primarily driven by poverty, abandonment, or marginalization, and instead suggests that those choosing it often have education, resources, and support.

The person who made that statement was Jocelyn Downie, a professor of law and medicine at Dalhousie University.

She said this during testimony before Parliament’s Special Joint Committee on Medical Assistance in Dying:

According to Health Canada, 76,475 Canadians died by Medical Assistance in Dying between 2016 and 2024. Based on a projected 5% annual increase, 2025 may see approximately 17,325 MAiD deaths, bringing the cumulative total since 2016 to nearly 94,000. Data suggest that 96% of MAiD recipients identify as White/Caucasian. Most of these individuals had financial stability, family support, and access to medical care.

Race and ethnicity data were only collected consistently starting in 2023. The first reports indicate that about 95–96% of MAiD recipients identified as White/Caucasian, while Indigenous peoples and other racialized groups made up a very small share of recipients.

To finalize this report: approximately 3% of MAiD recipients identified as being of Asian descent and 1% as Indigenous. Imagine what mainstream media would be reporting day and night if these numbers were reversed. Friends, we are living in a country that is actively deciding to kill its own citizens, especially the White population. It is time to stand up, call your MLAs and MPs, and demand an immediate pause to MAiD killings. I am committed to abolishing MAiD, because it no longer serves its original pretense of being only for adults with terminal and irreversible illnesses.

Every person on this earth is an image-bearer of God Almighty. We are all irreplaceable, unrepeatable, and highly valued, regardless of what our government believes. I cannot do this alone. I need everyone’s help. Together, we can make a real difference in this world.
