Are You AWAKE?

It’s a painful reality: statistics reveal that most children under four drown within just a few feet of their parents or guardians. It’s the leading cause of death for this age group, and it’s often a preventable tragedy. Basic swimming lessons—like teaching children to float on their backs—could save countless lives.

In my decade of teaching suicide intervention, I’ve learned a similar lesson about prevention. A key strategy in suicide intervention, such as in the Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) workshops I lead, is staying engaged in a tough conversation. Often, staying in the conversation for just a little longer—sometimes more than eight minutes—can make a difference. Just listening to someone’s story, without rushing them, can help them see that there is hope beyond their current crisis.

Imagine this scenario: it’s 3 a.m., and you’re sound asleep. Suddenly, a friend or family member is calling you or knocking on your door, urgently talking about their struggles. There’s no storm raging outside, but their distress is palpable. How would you respond? Would you be ready to support them, or would you be overwhelmed?

Think about it—who in your circle of friends and family would be there for you in such a situation? This isn’t just a nighttime scenario; emotional and psychological crises can happen at any time. Just as with preventing drownings, knowing how to intervene when someone is in emotional distress is crucial.

You don’t need to be a certified lifeguard to watch over children, but having basic knowledge about suicide intervention can be just as vital. It can make a difference in someone’s life, just as basic swimming skills can prevent drownings.

This October, I’ll be speaking about Basic Suicide Signs in a public engagement. If you’re interested in learning more and equipping yourself with the skills to help someone in crisis, stay tuned for registration details. Remember, awareness and action can be the key to saving lives.
